“A unique feature…is a transom that folds down to be a swim platform for easy access to the water. We have taken advantage of this all summer.”

INTERVIEW WITH THE SKIPPER—Alison Spring

Why did you choose to buy a Alerion?
We were looking for a classic cruising sailboat that performed well and could be single handed. Being able to single hand the boat was critical to me in my first few years of ownership while I teach my family how to sail. All Alerions are designed for ease of sail with mainsheet and jib lines running back to the helm. The Alerion ’41 has electric winches which means a simple push of a button to raise the main sail or trim the sheets.  We also fell in love with the beautiful interior of the Alerion ’41. A nice sized galley with teak compartments and two separate refrigerator units allow for food and beverage storage. There is both a forward and aft cabin which helps accommodate our family of five comfortably.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this Alerion model?
We looked at various sized Hinkley sailboats, but settled on the Alerion models quickly. We found the Alerions to be the perfect combination of classic lines and high performance.

What boats have you previously owned?
We just sold our Herreshoff 12.5’ Goodspeed, now headed back to her home port on the Cape.  She was the perfect first boat, lovely for harbor cruises and short sails up the coast. She is a classic and we would have loved for her to stay in Marblehead!

What are the features you like most about your boat?
The large cockpit has been wonderful so far in accommodating our family and friends both while sailing and swinging on the mooring. A unique feature to the Alerion ’41 is a transom that folds down to be a swim platform for easy access to the water. We have taken advantage of this all summer.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
None so far.

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
We primarily use Bluebird for coastal cruising but have spent a few nights in Boston, Gloucester, and Misery islands. Our goal is to increase our distance as our children grow and cruise to the Cape and Islands, as well as Maine.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
We use Marblehead Trading Company for servicing and have been very happy thus far.

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy an Alerion?
There are a number of Alerions in Marblehead Harbor, from the 28’, 33’, 38’ and our 41’. Find an owner and request a cruise. We are happy to take anyone out if interested! There are also a number of brokers you can find who specialize in Alerions.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Our family is also a skiing family and there is no better day to be on the slopes or on the water than on a bluebird day! Blue sky and warm sun after a storm—simply the best.
