About the boat
Why did you choose to buy this particular boat and what else did you consider?
Cruiser yachts have long been a favorite of mine since I owned smaller boats… I remember my friend Lyle (my buddy) pulled up for the first time with his about 6 years ago. It was so beautiful, 2013 express – I could not get my eyes off it. It was incredibly comfortable and well laid out… I mean he had everything he wanted, right where he needed it.
At that time, I owned a 290 Chaparral 2005. Then it happened, I saw this boat for sale in Gig Harbor WA. Right in my own back yard! I contacted the owner right away and struck a deal, It was meant to be… The owner was interested in a larger boat for him, and his wife.
What boats have you previously owned?
Maxum 21 FT CC, Rinker Fiesta Vee 250, Chaparral 290, and I also currently own Sea Fox 256 Commander (name FAUX FISHING).
What are the features you like most about your boat?
I must say it’s the layout, you can entertain in so many areas! First, the swim platform is a lovely place to hang out – it’s large enough to have an outdoor bistro (3 piece) set up to relax on. Then, there is the helm area and the aft lounge. And, if you want to get a bit more cozy, you can move below to the cabin area where there is lots of seating and it’s well equipped with entertainment…TV’s, music etc..
Where all have you and your boat traveled/Do you have any plans?
Wow, I’ve done it all… Canada yearly, and just about every port in between Olympia Washington and Princess Louisa Inlet. Went to San Juan Island for a month, yes one month, this year and last year.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
Well, as of now I have all that I need. I try to keep up my maintenance yearly and change whatever is broken or stops working… I just added new underwater lights because they stopped working. With a boat it’s constant work cleaning, polishing and waxing – it never stops, but it’s a labor of love…
Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
I do as a matter of fact, three. The Emerald Rose Yacht Club (very culturally diverse club), Totem Yacht Club out of Tacoma, Tacoma Outboard Association (TOA) a fun cruising club.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
Over the years I have found great people who love working on boats, but the CSR Marine (Des Moines) group has been most constant. They understand Volvo engines, they understand big boats.
Who first introduced you to boating?
Well, I had the pleasure of going on a fishing trip with my friend Francis Cambran in St. Lucia and got hooked… It was amazing, like a whole new world and there I was in the middle of the ocean fighting fish! I knew then that water life was for me… I’ve since been on countless fishing trips, whale watching trips, and so much more.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a boat like yours?
Don’t wait they are going up in price everyday…. Owning a boat is like being on vacation every weekend, it rejuvenates you on a Monday morning… Hurry up already!
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
My first boat’s name was “Nauti”, second boat’s name was “Bad Habit”, third boat’s name was “Po’ Buoy”, and now “What A Buoy”. Inspired because I love the water – “waterboy” – but I’m from the Caribbean, so as you know we have an accent lol!

None…
Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
Navtronics App is great, Windy App is useful…. and a good tide chart app always makes for safe boating.
