“From lobstering expeditions, to dinner off Misery Island, to cruises down the Maine coast, this boat takes care of us all summer. Actually early spring into late fall.”
Betty Ann, Southport 30′
Interview with the Captain – Betty Breuhaus
About the boat
Why did you choose to buy a Southport?
Contrary to Salvador Dali’s belief, “Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never achieve it,” we think the Betty Ann is perfect. In every way. This Southport Island 30 is aesthetically pleasing, and functional as well. Not only does she get us where we want to go, but she does it on drops of diesel. We can cruise with her, lobster on her, and drop anchor pretty much anywhere and be happy.
What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
We had a 21’ Pursuit and knew we wanted to upgrade. The choices were seemingly endless, but after focusing on our real needs, we knew exactly what we did NOT want. That eliminated a lot of boats.
How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
Spending most of the winter on yachtworld.com yielded nothing, and now it was spring. Painfully, many people advised us that this time of year was the worst time to be looking for boats. Really. Then along came Sam Pollard of Sailboats Northeast. His wealth of knowledge had gotten us to close previously, but then he called one morning and said, “I have your boat.” It seems so simple sometimes.
We drove down to Marion and knew instantly that she was ours. And we have been aboard her ever since.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
A thick rubber mat to protect her topsides when we lobster is just about it!
What are the features you like most about your boat?
Her practical features are, well, practical. And her profile on the water is lovely, although she might also look at home bobbing in a bathtub.
What boating organizations do you belong to?
EYC.
What boats have you previously owned?
We also own Bumpers, a 13’ Nautica inflatable. She is a proud companion to the Betty Ann.
How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
From lobstering expeditions, to dinner off Misery Island, to cruises down the Maine coast, this boat takes care of us all summer. Actually early spring into late fall.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
The Betty Ann is serviced locally, by locals. There cannot be a better place on earth when it comes to boat services. Coastline Marine does the heavy lifting, Kenny Rodgers does maintenance over the winter, and Matt Ryan of Devlin Marine Services does all the electrical work.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Southport like yours?
We actually visited the boatyard that builds Southport Island boats in Maine and met the owner. The frosting on the cake is that he was great, and we realized that our purchase had gone towards helping a worthwhile concern. Fewer than 20 hulls have been built, and they are ready to build more of these classic boats, so get on board!
