My favorite game fish is without a doubt the bluefin tuna. It’s like being connected to a school bus. It’s the most exhilarating fish to fight.”

Interview with the Captain — Connor Hurley

About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy a Scout and how did you go about the process?
We chose to buy a scout because of the great fishing space, quality, and the ability to make memories with the family when not fishing and anchoring up at our favorite spots.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
We looked into the Sailfish 270cc, Regulator 25cc, and  Scout 231xsf. The only close competitor was the regulator 25 due to the same quality and performance. We found the 23 xsf too small for our family of 5 and the sailfish 270cc was missing a lot of what we were looking for. The lack of hull design and quality really hurt its chances although being a good family fishing boat.

What boats have you previously owned?
Our previous boat was a Scout 255 DC and Grady white 300 canyon. The Grady white was an awesome boat but we wanted something newer and quicker. The 255DC was just not working for our family in the fishing field because it was lacking fishing features.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
Features I like most about our boat are its large flare design, reasonable and economic cockpit for setting lines, helm area especially the glassed in console. And the bow area is also great for entertaining. One of my personal favorites of the boat is the twin Yamaha 150 digitalis. It’s provided with a cruise speed in the 40 range which is amazing and very economical. I can make it to my favorite tuna spots in under an hour and I’m usually out there and set up before dawn which gives me a great advantage compared to the slower guys because I can set up where I want instead of having to settle.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
Some features we have added are LT marine swivel rod holders, Durabrite mini spotlight, underwater lights, and a full Garmin package to get us home safely.

Do you use the boat for anything other than fishing?
We love to use it on off days to go to our favorite anchoring spots and enjoy time with the family. The boat makes a trip to the vineyard for two weeks annually where it is on a sandbar most days.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
We belong to the Winthrop Yacht Club

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
Nothing honestly. Danversport is top-notch and treats us awesome. Wouldn’t want to buy from any other dealership.

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Scout-like  yours?
If
your buying a scout only buy from Brian at Danversport he’s the best out there and his sales show it

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
The story behind the boat’s name “Scout” is our French bulldog is named Scout and she’s an amazing girl. We also wanted to incorporate scout into the name as your “Scouting for fish”.

About Fishing

Do you fish recreationally or commercially?
I fish for tuna recreationally and Striped Bass commercially.

Who first introduced you to boating/fishing?
My father and grandfather first introduced me to small recreational fishing while my close Family friend Clinton Roderick showed me my love for offshore life.

What’s your favorite game fish (and/or season)?
My favorite game fish is without a doubt the bluefin tuna. It’s like being connected to a school bus. It’s the most exhilarating fish to fight.

Which tournaments have you participated in?
I have not participated in any yet to date but am planning on doing the bluefin blowout this year.

Do you fish with the same crew or does it vary?
I keep my crew to my good friend Kenny Streeter and Charlie Lane. We are well-oiled machine when that rod goes off and have a fun time doing it.

Do you have a most memorable catch (or story from a trip/tourney)?
My most memorable catch was my last trip of the season where we got hooked up to a 95” bluefin on the standup rod in the last 10 minutes. The fish took us on a 3 hour 4-mile journey.

Advice for less experienced anglers?
The only way to get better is trial and error and spending time on the water.

Most under-rated piece of equipment or tackle?
Honestly, my most underrated piece of equipment is my sabiki dehooker. It keeps baits very fresh without having to touch them and creates less of a mess on the deck.

Any recent fishing/boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g.product/tool/equipment etc)?
recently ordered a Morita Custom Flying gaff, a set of trident 130s from Reel East Custom rods, and a durable light.

Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
Definitely my satellite phone. It helps me keep in touch with other anglers without dropping information over the radio for the world to hear.
