Interview with the Captain — Jack Eudy
Why did you choose to buy a Valhalla?
We chose to buy a Valhalla for the sole purpose of being able to run 50-75 miles offshore with 5 foot seas and have the family and friends feel safe. The boat is very well made and, with a heavy profile, it eats up the waves all day and can still hold a cruise of 40mph with a top-end of 65mph. We also chose the boat because it’s built by Viking which is known to build a very good offshore machine.
What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this model?
We’ve had many boats in the past so we first started looking at makes and models we used to have, our favorite being a 44′ Wally tender Double Standard. We loved that boat; it was fast but was also great for a booze cruise in the harbor. It had huge lay out pads for the family and always turned heads going down Shem Creek.
How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing?
We are docked at City Marina where HMY has one of there locations. One day I was going to my boat, and saw this beautiful boat sitting on a trailer. A couple days later, she was ours.
Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
My father first introduced me to boating. He was a professional sailor and was the captain of his own sailboat, a Lutra 42′ named Big Booty. He was my inspiration to start boating and he had me driving his boats at an early age.
What boats have you previously owned?
We have owned a few boats in the past: a Lutra 42′ high performance sailboat, a Wally 44′ tender, an F18 performance cat, and a J/105 sailboat.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
The electronics have to be my favorite part. It has two 17 inch Garmin displays that fit the boat perfectly. Also the teak on the boat makes it stand out from any other center console on the water. For power it has twin Mercury 400’s which are perfect for it.
What features/improvements have you added, or do you plan to add?
We haven’t added anything yet but we plan to add DEKit on the decks and a teak transom.
How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
We fish on our boat during the summer and party on it. We mainly go to no name island which is just off of fort Sumter. It’s a great place to barge and float – we mostly use the boat to booze cruise during the summers.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Valhalla?
If you have the funds and want to make a statement, a Valhalla is the perfect boat. They’re built heavy and won’t get thrown around. They’re faster than most high speed center consoles and stand out. It’s the perfect fishing machine and family boat.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
My father flew planes all his life and his planes were fly by wire so when we got the new boat, we wanted to honor him. He passed a few years ago due to a plane crash so we came up with the name Flyin Wire to honor him and his boats.
