Here’s To Us, Carver 50’

Interview with the Captain – Sam C

About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy this boat and what else did you consider?
We chose this boat due to its size and comfort. We wanted an aft cabin, with a walk around master and a lot of space. Also, we wanted just one helm and the fully enclosed bridge area was perfect for running in most all type of weather. And it carries nearly 700 gallons of diesel in four tanks, as well as 350 gallons of water. It also has a separate washer and dryer which makes life easy while on the loop.

What boats have you previously owned?
A 26-foot Sea Ray Open Bow and a 22-foot Catalina Swing Keel.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
The space is great and the all-weather capability to cruise is perfect for us. We have four televisions on the boat and can get away to have our own space when we chose. We have chronicled the boats features in a virtual tour at: https://www.whatyachttodo.com/tour-our-1999-carver-504/

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
We added built in storage throughout the boat, upgraded the radar, plotter, AIS and also added and autopilot, cameras and a new depth sensor.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
We belong to the America Great Loop Cruiser Association (AGLCA) and the Marine Trawlers Owners Association (MTOA).

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
I don’t do a lot of the work on my own, but I do know one of the engines below (the port) takes a little bit more work for folks to service it. It is not a stand-up engine room, but not a crawl space either. You can move around fairly easily.

Who first introduced you to boating?
We grew up on a lake, so my family had a rowboat and a canoe all the time.

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a boat like yours?
Yes, take your time and be patient. Get a Buyers Broker that you can trust.

Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc.)?
Not really, we have had our boat over 4 years now and keep her updated.

Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc.)?
Yes, we keep a webpage dedicated to resources that people see in our videos. It is at https://www.whatyachttodo.com/resources/

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
The name was from the previous owners, so we don’t really know.
