About the Boat
Why did you choose to buy a Boston Whaler?
It chose me. The boat belonged to my departed father. He bought it new in 1967. I grew up and learned boating on that boat. He sold it to a family friend a few years prior to his death with the agreement if he were to ever sell her, he had to offer it back to us for what he paid for it. About 4 years after my father’s death, he offered her back to me, and I jumped on it.
What boats have you previously owned?
1967 Galaxy tunnel hull race boat I restored at age 21, a Chaparral 25.50 cruiser, a 28 Formula offshore speed boat, and most recently a 38 Luhrs Open Tournament sport fish.
Who first introduced you to boating?
My Father.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
The classic lines, and all Mahogany interior.
How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
I plan to take her to the Keys a some point once the restoration is done.
Do you belong to any other yacht clubs or other boating organizations?
Yes, when I had the Luhrs it was docked at VaBeach Fishing Center Marina
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
Keeping up with the woodwork.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Boston Whaler like yours?
Have a love for the classic Whaler and bring your wallet!
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Big Jim was what everyone called my dad and since I’m restoring her as a tribute to his memory, that’s the name.
