Interview with the Captain — Charlie O’Connor

About the club: Hull yacht club in Hull, MA

How would you describe what makes your yacht club special?
We are one of the oldest yacht clubs in the country, the first to offer “Open Races”, the first to allow women to race, first African American members, and we have always been an inclusive club. The members volunteer to do much of the work around the club. We have a sold-out junior program, a laser, Rhodes 19 and International 110 fleet, with club boats available for membership. We also have a busy social committee, cruising, and other committees that help keep the club running smoothly. We are a casual club with emphasis on Hearty Good fellowship, one of the original tenants of the club.

What are the most important things you hope to accomplish on your watch?
Continue to grow the Racing fleets, continue to improve the infrastructure and communicate with the membership on their thoughts and concerns.

About Your Boat

Why did you choose to buy a International 110?
So, I have owned many boats over the years, but currently I am a silent partner in 2 sailboats (Ensign and Rhodes 19), 2 motorboat 20′ Searay, and a 28′ Monterey. Also, I recently was donated this International 110 which I plan to restore and have as a club boat.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this model (and how did they compare)?
Actually, am still looking for a 30-40′ sailboat.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
Mostly through Club members.

What boats have you previously owned?
N10, Opti, Laser, 21′ Mako

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
I started as a 7-year-old at Hull Yacht Club’s Junior program.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
The original sport boat, amazing lines, all wood!

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
Ummm, everything, she needs a complete restore!

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
Mainly one design racer, I do run RC for Lasers and putt around occasionally

Do you belong to any other yacht clubs or other boating organizations?
Mass Bay, 110 Fleet, Rhodes Fleet, Laser Fleet

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
We will find out!

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a International 110 like yours?
They are just about the coolest sailboat on the planet, they are rare, so when you find one…grab it!!

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
She will be called “Stella Too”. The original name was Turn Too. I plan to paint it in the same pattern as my sky blue, cream 1964 Cadillac, that is named “Stella Blue”. Coincidentally the hull number is 64
