“It has so much space for a boat that fits into a normal slip at a marina. We also we love the shallow draft, 34 inches, which allows us to go anywhere that our powerboat friends go!“
Due’ Scorpios, Gemini Legacy 35′
Interview with the Captain – Todd Anthony
About the boat
Why did you choose to buy this particular boat and what else did you consider?
Originally we were looking for a 36-38′ sloop, but I took my family to the Annapolis Boat show in 2013 and we saw the Legacy and the Jennifer and our Daughter, Isabella, loved it.
What boats have you previously owned?
I owned a small 14′ Aqua fin sailboat, and a Four Winns 238 Vista Cruiser powerboat
What are the features you like most about your boat?
It has so much space for a boat that fits into a normal slip at a marina. We also we love the shallow draft, 34 inches, which allows us to go anywhere that our powerboat friends go!
What features/improvements have you added, or do you plan to add?
We’ve added a 2000 watt inverter, Anchor Windlass, 360 Watt Solar panel and new AGM Batteries, which allow us to run the refrigerator on the hook for 3 days at a time. And, upgraded the whole stereo with a fusion and JL audio system, so we can crank up the music! We also added a new mainsail from Precision Sails and a spade anchor with 60′ chain rode, plus 140′ of rope.
Where have you traveled with your boat?/what do you have planned?
We’ve gone as far South as Put in Bay, Ohio on Lake Erie, and as far North as Mackinac Island on Lake Huron. We plan to do the great loop when we retire in about 8 years.
Do you belong to a yacht club/marina or other boating organizations?
Boat US.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
2 motors and 2 hulls make cleaning and maintenance take that much longer and cost twice as much. We really like having the second motor for safety though.
Who first introduced you to boating?
Sailed 14′ Sun Fish boats in the Boy Scouts, but didn’t sail anything larger until I was in my 20’s. My friend Ed from the Military had a 30′ Sabre Sloop and took me out whenever we could go on Lake Erie near Buffalo, NY.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Gemini like yours?
I would say go for it! So much room and the ability to sail to shallow gunkholes is a great feature.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
My Fiancé Jennifer Lepez and I are both Scorpios, and also both Italian. The name means 2 Scorpios in Italian.
Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
We put the new sail on last week but haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. Looking forward to that!
Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
I-boating app is great and what we use for our navigation along with paper charts
