About the Boat
Why did you choose to buy this whaler and what else did you consider?
I was introduced to the sea and boating at a very young age by my grandfather. In my primary school years my folks had an 18 Boston Whaler Dauntless that I operated. Later in life, my girlfriend had an acquaintance that was selling a 17 Whaler Newport. I jumped on it immediately and haven’t looked back.
What boats have you previously owned?
This is my first boat that I purchased.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
I like the fact that it stands out among 17 Whalers. No matter what boating area you venture into, most folks have the 17 Montauk with the typical 90hp. Granted the 90 gets the job done. I find it almost mythical that my original 1980’ Newport has an original OEM 1980’ 140 Evinrude (that is serviced and runs immaculate). The engine aside, the design with the front windshield and side console stands out and gathers likes from all yachtsman.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
I’ve thought long and hard about my future intentions with this boat. I’ve come to the conclusion that this Classic deserves to be run as original. I have no desire to re-power or take the new approach. I do however plan to paint the engine off white and have the interior brought back to life this summer (wood stained and stainless rails buffed).
Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
No
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
Not really an issue. Charleston is a very tight knit boating community. When I purchased the boat locally in Charleston in 19’ the seller provided the mechanics info. Turns out he has been the same mechanic for many years on this boat.
Who first introduced you to boating?
Herb Wilcox, My late grandfather when I was 3.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a whaler like yours?
Make sure it’s what you want, lots of manufactures have newer style boating features. Make sure the classic Whaler is right for you.
Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
She’s been updated with latest electronics, bluetooth speakers, dual batteries, Moeller 22 gallon tank, interior LED lights. She has many modern features but she holds true to her original roots.
Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
Not really. I check the weather daily and if it’s enjoyable, I splash the Joy Anne II whenever it’s sunny.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Joy Anne II. My father grew up in Old Saybrook, CT and as a boy his father had a twin screw Canadian Shepherd called, Joy Anne. Joyce was my grandmothers maiden name and Anne is my late aunt. They live on in The Whaler.
