About the Boat
Why did you choose to buy a Grey Lady?
It’s unique. No one else has one here in Marblehead. She is only one of 11 custom-built hulls from Nantucket.
What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
I didn’t really. My first boat was a Regulator, which I loved, once I saw this, I was sold.
How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
She was built on Nantucket where my wife and I met. I bought her out there and drove her back, a 3.5 hour ride dock to dock.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
At this point, it’s all about maintaining her perfect condition.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
The Palm Beach Helm is my favorite (split throttle—see pictures in the gallery, here).
Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
My Dad.
What boats have you previously owned?
23’ Regulator
How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
All over the north shore, Boston and a trip or two to the Cape.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
No issue for me.
Do you have any notable boating resources you use?
Yes, a great marina that is responsive, knowledgeable and reliable – I use Hawthorne Cove in Salem.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Grey Lady like yours?
Good luck finding one!
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
I met my wife on Nantucket, where she was built. I named her ‘Island Spirits’ after the place my wife Kiki worked as a summer job while in college, the summer we met—Island Spirits was a gas station and a liquor store on the Nantucket back in 1990.
