“The Ericsons are solid, reliable, and very seaworthy…we love the handling and stability of the boat as well as a roomy layout down below.”
Bella Luna, Ericson 38′
Interview with the Captain — JuLee Colella
Why did you choose to buy an Ericson 38′ and what else did you consider?
Having previously owned an Ericson 27 and a 32, we are fans of Ericson sailboats. We chose the Ericson 38 because of its reputation, seaworthiness and comfort of interior design.
What boats have you previously owned?
Ericson 27 and 32, Formula 34 powerboat. We also currently own a vintage Aquasport 17, and a 21 Robalo Center Console.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
We love the handling and stability of the boat as well as a roomy layout down below including a separate shower. We double hand most of the time and find the boat easily handled for two. It is also very handy having a chart plotter and radar.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
We have added refrigeration, inverter, a manual engine hoist, electric toilet, cockpit shower, and microwave, along with updated sails. We plan to add a Doyle Cradle Cover this season.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
We do a lot of work ourselves so finding time and yard space.
Who first introduced you to boating?
JuLee grew up in Marblehead and began boating in early childhood, owning her first power boat in Marblehead harbor at age 14. Bill learned to sail Turnabouts at Winchester Boat Club at around age 10, and owned his first sailboat, a wooden super Sailfish at age 12.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy an Ericson like yours?
The Ericsons are solid, reliable, and very seaworthy but a good marine surveyor is always helpful.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
We wanted to keep the “moon” theme from previous boats, and since JuLee is of Italian descent, we incorporated that into the new name, Bella Luna.
Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
We recently acquired a hand held depth sounder that we are looking forward to using for dinghy explorations and possible anchorages.
Are there any other notable boating resources you like to use (apps, devices, etc)?
iNav X, Navionics, Windy, Willy Weather, and of course the Eldridge Tide and Pilot Book.
