“The previous owner was a serious boater and builder with a good eye for keeping things simple.”
MAINE EVENT, BHM 38′
INTERVIEW WITH THE CAPTAIN—Carl Edwards
Why did you choose to buy a BHM?
I liked the looks and ride of a typical Down East boat. Very sea friendly and fairly economical with a single diesel engine.
What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this model?
Almost any Spencer Lincoln designed boat I could afford.
How did you come to find / locate her before purchasing?
She was built for friend of mine that I went to school with at the University of Maine. I told her if she ever wanted to sell to contact me, and she did. I only had to wait 9 years.
Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
My father, Bill Edwards. As young men my brother and I would work on his wooden boat every spring and fall, and he would let us fish on it in the summer. Great life lessons were learned.
What boats have you previously owned?
A Crosby Hawk 29’. Prior that I crewed on my dad or brother’s boats.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
A sea-kindly ride, galley up for entertaining, and for cruising, having a stand-up shower that is separate from the head are all nice to have. The single diesel 3208 Cat has also been extremely reliable.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
She was built very close to what I would have requested of the builder. The previous owner was a serious boater and builder with a good eye for keeping things simple. Basically I have added a navigation mast and new electronics when needed.
How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
Recreational fishing in Mass Bay. My wife Diane and I usually take one or two cruises per summer with the BYC or by ourselves. Typically destinations are from Block Island to Bar Harbor.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
I do all my own commissioning of the boat. Most challenges with working on a boat my size are due to tight engine compartments. I am fortunate to have great access to the systems on my boat below deck, and with a single engine, there is sufficient room to change fluids and filters, access zincs, and other maintenance.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a BHM?
Do not be in a hurry to get to your destination. I usually cruise between 14 and 16 knots. Enjoy the ride—it will be a good one even if the weather kicks up.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
I went to school at the University of Maine, Orono. The boat was built in Maine, and I purchased it from a friend of mine that I went to school with in Maine. Diane and I like to cruise in Maine, it just kind of all fit.
