Paul & Rebecca + 3 cats
From what we were told, "Mystic Hearts" was named because of the fateful encounter that the two prior owners had when they first met and fell in love. We identified with quite a bit of their story and couldn't bear to change the name! Coming up with a boat's name is harder than it seems. We didn't want a pun or a name we'd regret choosing. We knew our boat's name needed to be easy to identify on the radio, clear to say, and be unique. We've never heard anything like "Mystic Hearts" and couldn't have picked a better name for our boat.
In our search for the perfect liveaboard boat, we knew we needed at least 2 cabins with 2 heads, preferably with one of the heads having a detached shower. Ample storage space was also important to us along with a roomy cockpit. We considered both the Beneteau 473 and Catalina 470 because both boats met our requirements. A 47' sailboat was our ideal size for living. Ultimately, while shopping around, we narrowed our search down between two Beneteau 473 sailboats. Our boat was previously a liveaboard boat, was well maintained, and was better equipped and upgraded for our needs.
Mystic Hearts has only had one prior owner. The couple who owned her bought her brand new in 2005 and lived aboard for 15 years until selling her to us. Our boat had many wonderful upgrades when we bought it and was well loved. We found her by searching YachtWorld.
Our first sailboat was a 1976 Irwin 25 named Gabriel that we purchased in 2012. We took Gabriel out on the weekends on the Chesapeake Bay for hours at a time. After a few years, we wanted a more comfortable boat for cruising on the Bay, so we bought Rocinante, a 1972 Pearson 33. On Rocinante, we did our first cruise across the Chesapeake Bay to the Virginia Eastern Shore town of Cape Charles. Ultimately, when we decided we wanted to live aboard and sell our home, we knew we needed a boat that would comfortably fit us along with our 3 cats. Our search for the perfect boat led us to Mystic Hearts - the rest is history!
We are full-time liveaboards, part-time cruisers with a goal of completing 2-3 month cruises at a time, coming home to the dock for a few months, and then heading out again. In October 2020, we did our shakedown cruise on the Chesapeake Bay, exploring quaint small towns while learning the ins and outs of our boat. In 2021, we spent the summer in New England and cruised the U.S. East Coast up to Nantucket. Winter 2021/2022 we cruised the U.S. East Coast down to Key West, Florida. We have no plans of stopping!
As a child, Paul had been out on motor boats with family on Lake Gaston in North Carolina and had his first exposure with boating. In 2010, we took a sailing class together on a Sunfish. Paul was instantly hooked and started dreaming of owning his own sailboat one day. That afternoon on the Sunfish was my first experience on a boat, and sailing for both of us.
