“I grew up on a lake in Switzerland and started boating there, mostly sailing. I later sailed professionally for 6 years before marriage and settling down in Marblehead.

Penalty Box, Sabre 36′

Interview with the Captain – Ted & Sue Kontos

About the boat

Why did you choose to buy a Sabre?
The Sabre is a well made boat and has the Down East style we were looking for.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
We looked at other Down East style boats but this Sabre had all the things on our check-list.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s his-tory if you know it)?
I found this boat on Yacht World.  It was located in New Jersey so we went down for a sea trial.  We are the 3rd owners.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
I added a bow thruster.  The boat already had all new electronics when we bought it.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
Love the flybridge, it offers great visibility when traveling and is also a great place to hang out in the evenings.

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
My grandfather had a boat and was one of 5 boats in the Danvers River.  He used to take the family for overnights at Misery Island.  My wife grew up racing Bullseyes and Rhodes 19s in Marblehead.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating/sailing organizations?
Marblehead Yacht Club.

What boats have you previously owned?
We started with a 20’ Aquasport and as the kids grew so did the boats.  We went to a 24’ Mako, 28’ Albin then a 31’ Albin.

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
We usually spend the weekend on the boat at the mooring and hang out in local spots.  We also spend a week down the Cape and sometimes another week traveling the coast of Maine.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
I do a lot of the maintenance myself.

Do you have any notable boating resources you use?
X

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Sabre like yours?
We love the Sabre, it’s a beautiful boat and a very comfortable layout.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
I played hockey and my 2 sons also played.  We all spent a lot of time in the penalty box so the name fits perfectly.
